Distillery District

Toronto’s Distillery District has been around before Toronto was even known as Toronto! Why is it called the Distillery District you ask? It’s because it was once one of the largest distilleries in the world!

The distillery was founded in 1832 by William Gooderham and James Worts when Toronto was known as York and continued until the 1950’s. After that, it remained vacant but was sometimes used in movie sets.

In the early 2000’s, it was acquired by a development company to convert it into an entertainment and residential area. There are a number of interesting shops and restaurants. There are events that take place throughout the year which include live music, food events, and the infamous Toronto Christmas Market.

The Toronto Christmas Market is very unique and is like an old European Christmas Market. There are vendors who sell various food and drink and other seasonal products. There are amusement rides for the kids and the atmosphere is wonderful. The Christmas Market has become so popular that there are line-ups to get in. It is best to visit the market on a weeknight as the line-ups are not as crowded.
